It is undeniable that humans and the environment – our home and habitat – are crucially linked. It is tragic that many of us, organizations in particular, neglect or deny this responsibility and fail to admit that our house is on fire. We all have a role to play and at Blacksire, we are constantly guided by our core values and desire to learn, acknowledging the lessons and valuable resources the earth shares with us. To give back, do our duty, contribute to the protection of the environment and not forgetting the chance for some team bonding, we organised the 2022 Beach Clean Up programme. Together, we engaged with each other and galvanized action on making environment-friendly decisions.

Beaches are not just a destination for some downtime and relaxation or fun

it is also a vital component of our beautiful yet vulnerable ecosystem. However, this natural home to hundreds of flora and fauna is jeopardized often by reckless human actions such as waste dumping and pollution. Land and sea waste such as plastic and polystyrene, combined with wave and currents make beaches the unfortunate landing ground of garbage.

Blacksire, through our Beach Clean Up programme, took on the mission of addressing this dire problem, as well as created this opportunity for all of you, our valuable family, to mingle, bond and build that team spirit that shapes the core of our organization. Blacksians who believe in the power of leading through actions and examples, volunteered to join the Beach Clean-up with Blacksire! 

Dozens of our wonderful Blacksian family stepped forward and registered to take part in this event, held on 14th May, starting as early as 6.30am on the beautiful, pristine Tanjung Bungah beach in Penang. Armed with their spirit to invest in planetary health, a healthy delicious breakfast, relevant equipment and important debriefing information, Blacksians got started with their beach clean-up efforts, with the event ending at around 9am. Each volunteer not just walked away with a sense of achievement, new friends, but also a Blacksire Save the Earth T-shirt provided by the team.

We step forward as a learning organization, aware of our responsibility to nature and the environment. This event taught us how simple yet powerful collective action can help save the lives or marine animals, help local economy through cleaner beaches, provide a safer environment for our fellow humans and be an integral part of the community – not just at Blacksire but as part of this beautiful planet we call home.
